• Self-Introspection Is Important.

It is critical to recognize that there is a significant difference between being enthusiastic about something in your head and actually doing it. Take a deep peek into yourself and determine if you are only fascinated with the idea of graphic design and the fun of using free vector icons, or if you are fully committed to setting your vision into motion. Graphic designing, after all, is not a small feat. Like everything else that is golden, it requires dedication, patience, and most importantly, practice.

• Concepts Are The Core.

If you are keen on pursuing your passion without being crystal clear about the basic concepts, you are building castles in the air. Honing the basics will enable you to make the most out of the art and fetch you desirable results in the longer run. Let us learn about some fundamentals that every graphic design fanatic should know.

1. Lines Are Not Always Straight.

Let us break out of our class 2 math hour and do away with the conventional notion of the line. In the realm of graphic designing, lines are more than a strikingly straight string-like connection between any two given points on a surface. Lines here can be straight, curved, zigzag, dotted, rough, brushed, smooth, thin as a needle, and thick as a thumb, just like our moods. Scribbled lines, for example, can be symbolic of confusion. Similarly, a fine line can imply perfection.

2. You Can Communicate In Colors.

Color serves as a powerful source of expression, setting the tone and the mood of the design. Ordinarily, graphic designers follow the color theory or the color wheel as a standard guideline for choosing different colors and combinations.

Colors are categorized as under:

• Primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.

•Secondary colors: violet, green, and orange.

• Tertiary colors: rose, orange, violet, and azure, among others.

Different color schemes such as harmonious, analogous, triad, and tetradic or rectangular are also used for selecting colors.

3. Shapes- Subtle And Sharp.

Shapes are forms and figures defined or demarcated by a definite outline on any given surface. As a graphic designer, you can experiment with many shapes, most of which are classified as geometric or organic.

Geometric shapes are two-dimensional or three-dimensional figures made out of straight or curved lines. These are innately simple and sharply defined in appearance. Triangles, quadrilaterals, hexagons, spherical or cylindrical shapes are some of the most common examples.

Organic shapes, on the other hand, are less even. They are more for expressing emotion rather than perfection. Natural shapes like leaves, flowers, and clouds are examples of organic shapes.

4. Texture Is Your Canvas.

The texture is equivalent to a base on which you would place an object. It also resonates with a canvas where designers express their ideas. It can be:

• Natural or environmental with the visual of natural surfaces such as wood, sky, water, or grain.

• Biological with animal prints or furry textures.

• Man-made with illustrations, paintings, abstract patterns, and colors.

It can set the vibe of your design. A hardwood texture, for example, can make the graphic appear more nature-friendly, while an illustrative or patterned texture can make the design appear more urban.

5. Images Are A Thing, So Are Free Vector Icons!

Image, another critical component in graphic design, reflects the core idea or the subject of your creation. You can use photographs or illustrative images to build a sense of engagement with your audience. However, you must ensure that the image is persuasive and aptly reflects the message you are trying to get over to your audience.

Yet another effective and instant way of conveying your idea is by using icons. There are many icons available out there and you will be pleased to learn that the best ones like free vector icons  are for free. Plus, they are available in different categories, so you can pick one or many to set the mood of your design in the most intriguing fashion.

6. Type It Right.

Typography is another crucial element in graphic designing, or rather, yet another tool for expressing your ideas in the design. It enhances the larger mood and message of your design while being either sharp, rounded, or script-like, among other forms. However, you must make sure that it is easily readable.

7. The Elements Need Space Too.

Space gives the elements or components that you use in your work more room to interact. It makes the design appear as a singular blanket with each element having a space for itself, rather than a tight club of titbits and heavy objects. Space can be narrow or broad, depending on the design layout and your preference.

• Kick-Start With Editing Tools :

Equip yourself with some potential tools such as graphic editing software, the most common being pixel, and vector editing systems for creating cool designs logo. While you can edit and manipulate images with the former, the latter enables you to create fancy text, logos, and vector icons. You can also use a range of  free vector icons to elevate your designs. These can also be downloaded in png, SVG, and jpg formats.

Wrap up:

Engaging in graphic design community forum discussions to exchange your ideas, ask queries, and learn more about the latest trends in the field is also a great way to upscale your knowledge.

Given the increasing demand for graphic designing, the competition is also growing stronger. As a passionate graphic designer, you must continually thrive to stand out from the crowd and tear through the cut-throat competition.  We hope this large info-byte becomes a great starting point for you to embark on your journey of graphic designing.
