What is Carbonless Paper?

If you're not familiar with carbonless paper, you may think it's just another of the many types of forms and stationery used in business today. But it's much more than that. Carbonless paper, more commonly known as NCR (no carbon required) paper, was initially designed to be explicitly used in cash registers but has since come to serve so many more purposes that it has become an essential part of the business world at home as well.

Carbonless Paper

Understanding Carbonless Paper

Carbonless copy paper allows users to produce multiple copies of a document without manually reproducing it numerous times. The idea behind a standard blank sheet of copier paper is relatively simple: it contains an emulsion that transfers images and text to another sheet when pressure is applied using heat.

Invented in 1806 and named for its utility for creating copies, carbonless printing was first used to keep track of sales made at grocery stores in Chicago, Illinois. Carbonless printing was originally manufactured by Multilith Inc., a Chicago-based manufacturer specializing in perforating and embossing technology; as a result, Multilith's brand name became associated with carbonless printing until recent years.

How Carbonless Paper Works

Carbonless paper's special coating contains a chemical that reacts with heat and pressure, causing it to change color. When you print on carbonless paper, heat from your printer causes chemicals in its coating to form images of your text or graphics (called an indirect process).

Your documents then pass through a pair of rollers (often made of aluminum), which apply more heat and pressure to darken and fix these images onto your copies. After printing, use a soft cloth or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean off any leftover toner left behind by your printer. This will ensure that your document copies maintain their vivid colors for years. Carbonless printing adds a personalized touch without complicating your marketing efforts.

Carbonless Paper in Businesses

It's no surprise that businesses have embraced digital processes for a wide variety of functions. Everything from booking travel, ordering office supplies, and creating invoices has gone electronic. But one thing hasn't changed: businesses still rely on hard copies of documents to prove their existence or convey information. Whether you need printouts for your files or need multi-page reports duplicated and stapled, many business owners find themselves driving to a local printing store to get these forms duplicated manually.

It's an inefficient process that adds time and cost for little benefit beyond duplication; if you don't need 100% accuracy with every copy, there are plenty of other ways you can create higher quality document prints without buying an expensive printer designed specifically for business use. For example, you could use digital carbonless printing technology from Duplo USA Inc. This innovative technology allows businesses to create multi-page documents quickly and accurately—without wasting money by buying specialty equipment (like laser printers). The History of Carbonless Paper

In 1806, Henry Pitkin was awarded a patent for carbon paper that had a smokey substance applied to one side. The smokey substance made a copy of whatever was written on it.

Carbonless printing dates back much farther than Pitkin; 16th-century German publishers created orders and invoices without an original, so they could easily be reproduced (using blind carbon) for mass distribution. While early versions of the carbonless paper were used by businesses to decrease errors and reprint lost documents, by 1980, most companies had started using digital information systems because carbon paper became expensive.

Digital systems, while more costly at first, were often more economical in the long run because they drastically reduced wasted papers caused by typing errors or incomplete pages. In addition to saving time and money, digital copies allow business owners to access their records from anywhere globally via computers or smartphones with internet connection capabilities. Thus, in 2017 when people talk about carbonless documents, they usually refer to printouts that can only be printed once using specialized printers (in contrast with general copiers, which reproduce high volumes of information).

Information Technology Is Here to Stay

So, what exactly is carbonless or digital carbonless paper, and how does it work? The carbonless or digital carbonless form has a special coating on each page that allows you to print with a laser printer directly onto it. This eliminates any messy ink smudges on either side of each sheet of paper. However, if you need double-sided prints, you can print onto one side of your sheets and then flip them over to print again. The digital carbonless paper looks very similar to traditional copying and faxing forms, making it easy for those with sensitive eyesight and easily visible to read through.

Conclusion

The carbonless paper has become a popular way for businesses to print multi-part documents. While it may be similar to standard printers, digital carbonless printing still has some unique attributes that make it an effective solution for customers who want easy and efficient printing of multiple copies of a document. This guide should assist you in understanding more about carbonless printing so you can decide if it's right for your needs.
