When you get bored, one of the best options you have to cure that boredom is a game. Whether you’re playing with your friends or on your own, or on a tablet, phone, console, or PC, there are literally hundreds of options out there to suit your specific needs.
If you’re just looking to kill some time, it’s usually best to go with a simple title that immediately grabs your attention, but there are also many more complicated games that work great as well if you have an hour or so. In this article, we’re going to cover a broad spectrum. Here are eight excellent choices nearly everyone is sure to get hooked on.
1. Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a great choice for just about anybody.
The premise is simple: you’ve been given the keys to an old farm, and it’s your job to rebuild it. That’s not all, though. Similar to titles like Animal Crossing, the game is as much about meeting other characters as the daily tasks you complete. You’ll build meaningful relationships with the well-written and varied village folk, and it’s really this element of the cute little farming sim that brings it to life.
Better still, the game can be played on any platform, so you don’t need a brand new console to enjoy it (many people play it on their phone).
2. Baulder’s Gate 3
If you’re looking to get lost for hours and you like RPGs (or are at least willing to give them a chance), Baldur’s Gate 3 is your answer.
The game has won numerous awards since its release and has been praised over and over again for its rich world, deep characters, and freedom of choice. This is a turn-based RPG that truly allows you to play however you want, and it's this degree of detail that makes it difficult to put down.
You can currently play BG3 on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms.
3. Celeste
If you like platformers like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Bros, you most certainly don’t want to miss out on Celeste.
This whimsical 2D adventure has you take on the role of a young girl trying to climb a treacherous mountain – but there’s a twist. The game focuses heavily on mental health struggles like depression and anxiety, with the player having to fight off against an alternate version of themselves. It’s a refreshing take on the formula, and the seamless controls make for an addictive, satisfying experience from start to finish.
You can pick up Celeste on all modern platforms apart from mobile devices.
4. Minesweeper
It doesn’t get much simpler than Minesweeper, but sometimes, the best games are the simplest ones – and this is a fantastic choice if you’re bored and have some time to kill.
The player is provided with a grid covered in squares: some squares have mines hidden beneath them, and some are safe. If you uncover a square with a mine, the game's over, but if you reveal a safe space, you’ll be shown some numbers. These numbers tell you how many mines are close by so that you can more accurately uncover other safe areas and avoid the rest of the mines. Once you’ve uncovered all safe spots, you win.
The game has been ported to dozens of platforms over the years, but generally, the best way to play it today is for free online.
5. Vampire Survivors
Vampire Survivors is widely considered one of the most fun pick-up-and-play titles of recent times, and having finished your first round, you’ll easily see why.
The player chooses from an assortment of characters, each with different abilities. The premise after that is to simply survive. You’ll need to get through wave after wave of enemies, collecting upgrades as you go, and all you have to do is manoeuvre through the world with your mouse, thumbstick, or fingers and let your upgraded weapons do the rest.
This is one that’s easy to learn, difficult to master, and you’re sure to have a great time with it. You can get it on all major platforms.
6. Rocket League
If you’re looking to kill some time with a few friends, Rocket League is always a good bet.
Think of this game as soccer with cars. You’ll customize your own rocket-powered vehicle and then take to the arena to fend off against a team of other players. There are multiple game modes, each of which tasks you and your team with scoring goals with the oversized ball on screen.
There’s a high skill ceiling, with the best players having mastered the dozens of tricks the game has to offer (you can also ride up the walls for clever trick shots).
Rocket League is another game that’s available on all major platforms.
7. Fortnite
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll absolutely have heard of Fortnite. In this ultra-popular Battle Royal game, one-hundred players fight against each other in a sprawling map.
It’s a shooter at heart, but unlike traditional online games of this type, you won’t respawn. Once you’re dead, you’re dead, and the winner is the person who can rise to the number one spot by becoming the last person standing. There’s a big emphasis on building, too, as you’ll gather materials to create bases and forts as you go to protect yourself from the enemy.
Fortnite can be played on every modern platform and is free to play, so you shouldn’t have any issues trying it out for yourself.
8. Tetris Effect
And finally, there’s Tetris Effect, a title that changes just enough about the timeless classic to reinvent it without spoiling any of the original charm.
The game considerably upgrades the visual and audio elements far beyond those of any other version, making the game a truly mesmerising experience at times. It’s something you can play for a few minutes or over an hour, and is one you’ll keep coming back to time after time.
You can play the game on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
Wrapping Up
Hopefully, this list has inspired you to get out there and try some new games. Try all ten, and you’ll surely never be bored again. Good luck!
